In the days leading up to the first elections held in Burma in 20 years on Nov. 7, dozens of Burma border-based organizations launched a website to share citizen reports of widespread abuse and fraud. Burma Election Tracker (www.burmaelectiontracker.org) shows detailed reports, eye witness accounts, pictures and video gathered through established networks of exile media and civic organizations operating throughout Burma. The site also provides ongoing analysis and recommendations.
More of the story will be revealed in the coming weeks as information trickles out of the country and the situation develops surrounding the recently released Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Dr. Naing Aung, a key Burmese activists involved in the election tracker program, will share his first-hand experiences moving information in and out of the country as well as insights into the politics of Burma in the post-election period.
Dr. Naing Aung is a long time leader of the movement for democracy in Burma and currently the secretary general of the Forum for Democracy in Burma.
Stephanie Lynn is a senior program director responsible for managing NDI’s programs for Burma and Malaysia. In her 10 years with NDI, Lynn has trained more than 2,000 women and men from 20 countries, across three continents.
Pat Merloe is a senior associate and directs electoral programs conducted by NDI. He has observed election processes in more than 25 countries and led or participated in over 130 NDI delegations and assistance teams to more than 50 countries.
Ian Schuler is a manager of information communication technologies (ICT) for NDI’s technology team. He advises and supports the integration of technology into NDI programs.
