The best instances of Namibia. Namibia is geographically a big country with very small population. As a result, people travel a long distance from one town to the other. This hampers the participation of the communities in national discussions. This is the Namibia experience and I hope that you can hear and learn something from our experiences. I hope to learn something from yours. I thank you.

Marina Ottaway: Thank you very much. Our second speaker is Mrs. Nergui, to my right and she is a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister of Mongolia. She is the first lady to take on such position in Mongolian history. She was a founder of the Young Economist Club and before joining the Prime Minister's office, she took several important positions in the Mongolian Central Bank in the Institute of Finance and Economics. Since 1990 she became one of the leading proponent of Economic Reform in Mongolia. She has studied in Russia as well as in Australia.

Ms. Dorj Nergui: Thank you, Miss Chairman. The topic I wanted to talk today is about the globalization and women. How the globalization affects to [inaudible] in particular case as in Mongolia.

So as we all know, the globalization is modern terminology. However, this [inaudible] centuries ago. And most people think that the globalization is only a kind of economic terminology but I see this as a much broader terminology than just an economic one. So I would say that democratic movement involved. It is high time the economic reforms and the reforms in the social sector also we could understand under the globalization process in the world.

And the topic I was preferred to choose was the right one I think because we can see the positive and as well as the negative impacts of this on women and as well as in the whole society in every country. So if you consider, if you look at the Mongolian case, then I would say that the positive impacts of globalization and democratic movement in a common [inaudible] and womanize force. It gives an opportunity for women to engulf more in politics and secondly in general terms, we have a freedom to choose and women are becoming more economically active. For instance I can say one example that statistical data shows that 6 percent of small and medium size enterprises are led by women in Mongolia and they are Directors and they are in honors of their small businesses now. And our temp (ph) center for parliamentarians are now women. If you compare the cases in 1990 to after the 1992 election, then the number of women's participation increased by about 2 and 3 times. And we have now one woman Minister, Minister of Excel (ph) Relations and an advisor to the Prime Minister. And also, we see more communication of women's angio's (ph) with the public which is very important. We had all our thirty women's angos in Mongolia, five of them are very active in terms of politics, in terms of walking with children, in terms of education our young population and so on.

However there are also some negative impacts we see. The first. Martyrs (ph) with many children - disadvantages due to quick reforms in economy and as well as in the politics. And also [inaudible] group of the population, including of course the Martyrs (ph) with many children also, disadvantages. And these are the negative impacts in a short term. But if you look at the statistical data since 1990, after several years of deceptional (ph) our whole economy, now this major social indicators improving. We can see a good tendency after this. And women's ango's (ph) worked on our search on those impacts and in that found that there is a net benefits of all globalization process. I mean out of democracy and due to the reforms.

And if we see the positive net benefits, then of course we could support all the reform process. But still a woman's participation and top decision making level is very low in Mongolia. And we found several manufacturers influenced to this. Once is old mentality and tradition influencing to this and secondly at the political system itself, and three lectural (ph) system also affecting to this. And that will burden on the women also affecting. And lastly, less ambitious behavior of women also influence to this.
