Topic Discussion I
Politics of Hard Choices
Political Transition and Economic Restructuring
Room 5
(22 of 22 pages)

Chair: Thank you very much. Since this is a conference about democracy
I want to run this and close this as democratically as possible. I will propose that Matt write up the recommendations
overnight and that anybody who is interested in making sure their views are represented in the written recommendations
to the conference, that we all convene at lunch time tomorrow, Matt and I will be at a table waving our hands.
I also want to thank everybody for their ideas; it has been a very stimulating discussion. I also want to say that
I think although we would disagree about many things, I think we would all agree on one thing and that is that
we need stronger partnerships between developing governments and developing civil societies on the one hand and
also I endorse the viewpoint that we need stronger north south partnerships, we need real partnerships between
the international, financial institutions and the donors on the one hand and the developing countries both the
civil societies and governments on the other. On that note I want to thank everybody for their participation and
I wish you a very productive rest of the conference.
