Mauritania Election Bulletin 2011

Demonstration Mauritania

Legislative and municipal elections are scheduled to be held in Mauritania on Oct. 16. The vote will be the first parliamentary elections in the North African country since President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz took power in 2008. But with mounting citizen unrest, multiple opposition parties threatening a boycott and concerns over the transparency of preparations, it remains to be seen whether elections will take place as planned. These bi-monthly bulletins explore issues surrounding the poll, such as voter registration, election preparation, political party developments and citizen engagement.
