Burkina Faso’s ongoing decentralization process has provided opportunities for increasing women’s political participation at local levels of government. Since 2005, NDI has supported many of the 6,400 women elected as local councilors and provided management skills training to thousands of the women councilors and mayors. In order to build upon these successes, NDI recently began training a corps of master trainers to continue increasing the capacity of women councilors and party activists.

Initiatives that help empower the next generation of women leaders is a cornerstone of NDI’s programs in the Middle East and North Africa region. In July 2008, NDI organized the inaugural MENA Regional Young Women Leaders Academy in Doha, Qatar . The program was designed to provide young women with the intellectual tools, comparative knowledge and practical skills necessary to become leaders in their communities and public life. Following the academy, the participants began applying their newly-acquired skills and taking control of their professional development through internships with political parties and civil society organizations.

Despite social pressures and discriminatory party practices, recent elections in Latin America resulted in an increased number of women elected to serve in legislatures and high profile positions. In cooperation with the Institute for Representative Government (IRG), NDI convened ten of these influential women to participate in a study mission focusing on building linkages among women legislators in the region. The women legislators came together in Washington, D.C. to share information and gain knowledge on how to organize women within parliaments to achieve policy goals.

While women have made significant gains increasing their participation in legislatures, political parties and civil society across the world, women are still severely underrepresented in the executive branch. In an effort to explore this problem, NDI, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held a meeting of current and former women executive office-holders to discuss the unique challenges faced by women in such positions and to explore the kind of assistance needed to support them.
