NDI Honors President Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and 50/50 Group from Sierra Leone
On October 24, 2007, NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright joined U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and hundreds of guests to celebrate women blazing new trails in their countries despite tremendous odds.
NDI presented the W. Averell Harriman Democracy Award to Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (pictured, at right, with (l-r) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, NDI President Kenneth Wollack, and NDI Board Chairman Madeleine K. Albright) for her sustained commitment to democracy and the Madeleine K. Albright Grant to the courageous women of the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone.
During the luncheon NDI debuted a short film, 'Side by Side.' The movie documents the challenges faced and overcome by the Madeleine K. Albright Grant-winning 50/50 Group in changing politics, and bringing more women into government, in Sierra Leone.
