NDI

The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

Since 1995, NDI has assisted Armenia’s main political parties on long-term organizational development and citizen outreach programs. To foster greater citizen participation in political dialogue, NDI also has sought to strengthen civil society organizations.

Current Activities

Political Party Development

NDI assists Armenia’s major political parties by conducting programs for their leaders, managers and members of women’s and youth wings. The Institute has assisted parties from across Armenia’s political spectrum on using grassroots organizing methods, such as door-to-door canvassing and town-hall style meetings, to understand and represent voters’ concerns.

Women’s Political Participation

In 2006, NDI established a Women’s Forum to promote women’s participation in political processes. Drawing inspiration from the Institute’s Win With Women initiative, the Forum advocated for women to make up 25 percent of each party’s electoral list and to be placed in every fourth position for the May 2007 parliamentary elections. As a result, the number of women elected to the current parliament nearly doubled.

Civic and Election Organizing

To help promote citizen participation in government decision-making, NDI is working with nongovernmental organizations on conducting issue-based advocacy with the support of concerned volunteers.

NDI also has advised ‘It’s Your Choice,’ a nonpartisan domestic election monitoring group, on its election observation efforts.
