The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

J. Brian Atwood is the dean of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota and a former president of NDI. Mr. Atwood is the former president of Citizens International, which he created to design and manage public and private social development investments to meet the needs of developing nations. He served for six years as administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development during the administration of President Clinton, and received the U.S. Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award in 1999. Mr. Atwood is an adjunct lecturer at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School and is currently teaching a course on development assistance.
