The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
Algeria
NDI has worked in Algeria since 1997, helping to strengthen intermediary institutions such as political parties, civil society organizations and the media to make them more effective vehicles for channeling popular will for sustainable political, economic and social reform. A key component of the Institute’s work has been helping to strengthen Algerian political parties so that they are more representative, transparent and internally democratic. A key aspect of enhancing political party effectiveness and electoral processes is promoting increased participation of women and youth. Similarly, NDI works with a variety of local partners to promote an informed citizenry with more understanding of issues related to elections and political processes, and thereby more engaged in political life.
