NDI

The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

John Durkin is the senior associate of NDI's human resources department, where he oversees strategic initiatives, benefits, compensation and HRIS. Since joining NDI in 1998, he has formulated and formalized a wide range of HR policies and procedures, and implemented numerous state-of-the-art programs and systems.

Previous to his current post, Mr. Durkin directed human resources at ACDI/VOCA, a USAID-funded, international non-profit organization that conducts agri-business and technical assistance projects in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. In this capacity he handled international compensation, relocation, health and pension benefits, and USAID legal compliance. In addition to his non-profit experience, Mr. Durkin earlier worked in the private sector for a national law firm and a bank, and spent time as a Chinese linguist in Taiwan and Japan.

Mr. Durkin earned his MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University and BA from the University of Maryland. He also is a certified senior professional in human resources, and has served on the board of directors of professional association chapters of the Society for Human Resources Management and the American Compensation Association. Mr. Durkin has also been invited to speak about the development of performance appraisal systems at international non-profit conferences.
