The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

NDI celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 10 by honoring two champions of democracy, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe and the Network of Chocó Women of Colombia, at an event hosted by NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright.

In the second forum in a series focusing on elections, the Great Lakes Policy Forum explored Rwanda's upcoming elections. The forum reviewed political party strengthening efforts, explored electoral issues, and hosted a discussion on predictions for the election and the implications of those predictions. What will the 2010 elections mean for open democracy in Rwanda? What does this mean for the region?

A commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Frost-Solomon Task Force, which provided assistance from the U.S. Congress to new parliaments in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union from 1990 to 1996, will be held in Warsaw June 7.

The event is sponsored by the Senate and Sejm of Poland and the House Democracy Partnership (HDP), a successor organization to the Frost-Solomon Task Force.
