

The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
As technology and politics become increasingly intertwined, citizens throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are using new media tools to organize and make their voices heard as they demand reform. Examples of citizen movements in Tunisia and Egypt mobilized through Facebook and Twitter demonstrate the power and vulnerabilities of these communication tools. Panelists will explore the role new and social media has played in the dissemination of information and in supporting offline mobilization across the region.

NDI and the National Capital Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women invite you to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day with a film screening and panel discussion of La Hija Del General (The General’s Daughter).
NDI celebrated the 100th International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8, by participating in several events around the world. The Institute kicked off the celebration with an event in Washington featuring Kyrgyzstan President Roza Otunbayeva, who was in town to be recognized during the International Women of Courage awards at the State Department.
