Nenad Simovic is the resident country director for NDI's Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) programs. He assists select political parties in both entities of BiH in developing policy platforms that respond to citizen concerns and reform priorities. In this capacity, Mr. Simovic has overseen and analyzed results of local polling and public opinion research, working with the leadership of NDI's partner parties to integrate the results of this public opinion research into party policies before discussing them with civil society representatives in public forums and town hall meetings. Political dissidents from China, Syria, Iran, Ethiopia, Cuba and Burma joined NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright and others to pay tribute to the life and work of Václav Havel at the National Endowment for Democracy. Havel, a playwright and political activist who went on to become the president of Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic, died last month at the age of 75.

Voter enthusiasm was again a dominant feature of this third round of voting in the Egyptian People’s Assembly elections. Three credible rounds of polling now raise the likely prospect that Egypt’s next parliament will reflect the will of the people, NDI said in a statement released in Cairo.

Two years after the devastating January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the country is attempting to rebuild with the help of development proposals prepared by citizens. These efforts, known as roadmaps, or “cahiers de charges,” have been endorsed by elected officials across the country as a way to demonstrate that they are listening to citizens and have set specific goals for reconstruction and development efforts.

On Dec. 29, 2011, security forces raided NDI’s offices in Cairo, Alexandria and Assiut as well as those of Egyptian and other international organizations. During the raid, equipment, documents, and money were confiscated and have yet to be returned. They provided no warrant, explanation for the search, or inventory of the items seized.

Colombia Anti-Discrimination Photo, 382px

A landmark anti-discrimination law, described by one supporter as “an homage to equality,” was signed into law last month by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. For the first time, it levies prison sentences for acts of discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation or nationality.

The law is “a form of justice,” said President Santos. “It was time to get tough on this and to ensure the protection of the rights of those discriminated against.”

NDI mourns the passing of former Czech President Václav Havel. The Institute recognized Havel in 1991 with its W. Averell Harriman Democracy Award, honoring him for his years as a dissident, political essayist and leading figure in the Velvet Revolution of 1989 — the bloodless end to communism in Czechoslovakia.
