NDI Democracy Luncheon

NDI presented the 17th W. Averell Harriman Democracy Award and the third Madeleine K. Albright Grant at the NDI Democracy Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi — the highest-ranking woman in American government — delivered the keynote address and joined us in honoring the achievements of this year’s awardees.

NDI Hosts Roundtable on Gender Politics in the Western Balkans

p>Changing gender politics in the Western Balkans was the theme that brought together eight young Balkan leaders to participate in a lively discussion co-hosted by NDI and the National Albanian American Council (NAAC).   Topics ranging from gender quotas for elected office to social implications of gender equity were posed by NDI’s Aleksandra Pajevic, the Institute’s field director in Albania, who moderated the session called “Women in Government, Access to Power.”

Iraq's Provincial Elections: The Outcome and the Impact

The panelists at this discussion, who were in Iraq on election day, discussed the elections, the role of the Awakening tribes, how Sunni Arab participation affected voting, how Prime Minister Maliki fared in this major political test, and whether the provincial elections could serve as a barometer for the upcoming national elections.

Political parties serve as vehicles by which citizens can come together freely to define their political and policy aspirations and campaign for public office. NDI is a nonpartisan organization and works with parties of many ideological persuasions to help foster open, accountable and responsive political systems.

As part of that effort, NDI maintains relationships with party internationals, institutes, foundations, groups and other organizations that span the political spectrum. These include:

NDI works with partners around the world to build more effective, transparent, accountable, and responsive governments. The Institute currently has governance programs in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Assisting in that effort are a number of organizations and institutions in the United States and abroad that are themselves dedicated to strengthening and supporting democratic governance. They include:

While women’s political participation has increased in Burkina Faso since the decentralization process began in 1998, there are still major cultural and structural barriers that must be overcome to ensure women’s effective participation in public life. Since 2005, NDI has supported women’s increased political participation in Burkina Faso through a Sida-funded program that has contributed to the election of 6,400 women local councilors (about one-third of the approximately 18,000 total local councilors) and enhanced the management skills of women councilors and mayors.
