NDI has conducted democracy assistance programs in Belarus since 2000, partnering with citizens who want to build democratic political institutions. The Institute has helped to strengthen nongovernmental organizations and political parties, and has helped citizens learn more about their rights and responsibilities.

Political Party Development

NDI shares international experiences with political party reform and long-term development with its partners. NDI focuses its efforts on strengthening political party branches through outreach to members and supporters at the regional and local level. The Institute has also supported democratic parties’ efforts to coordinate their outreach and election organizing activities.

Civil Society Development

The Institute also works to build the capacity and effectiveness of Belarusian nongovernmental organizations, associations, and community service groups in representing citizens and increasing their involvement in civic and political affairs. NDI advises local organizations on strengthening their bases of support, establishing networks of like-minded organizations, and developing plans for issue advocacy, citizen education and watchdog activities.

Funding

NDI programs in Belarus have been funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.
