Jimmy Carter has received international acclaim for his activities as a former president. His efforts to support free and fair elections have enabled countries to initiate transitions to democratic governance.

Through the Carter Center of Emory University, President Carter has worked tirelessly to help resolve seemingly intractable conflicts. President Carter played a leading role in assisting democratic transition processes in Nicaragua, Haiti, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Guyana. He helped mediate between warring factions in Ethiopia and Liberia and monitored the historic 1991 elections in Zambia.

Throughout the world, President Carter has personified commitment to human rights and social justice. For his many personal contributions to democracy, NDI was proud to honor him with the 1992 W. Averell Harriman Award.
