NDI has conducted democracy assistance programs in Uzbekistan since 2003, partnering with citizens and organizations that want to build democratic political institutions. The Institute has helped to strengthen nongovernmental organizations and political parties, and has helped citizens learn about their rights and responsibilities.
Political Party Development
NDI works with Uzbekistan’s major political parties to assist them in their efforts to be more participatory and responsive to citizens’ needs. Past NDI discussions with political parties have focused on sharing international best practices for reaching out to the public, developing legislative policy agendas that are informed by public opinion, and creating systems to communicate more effectively with citizens.
Civil Society Development
NDI also assists nongovernmental civil society organizations in identifying and prioritizing issues of concern to their constituents and designing effective advocacy campaigns to address them. These programs have provided comparative international models to Uzbekistan’s civic organizations.
Funding
NDI programs in Uzbekistan have been funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
