Amid the political disunity affecting both reformists and conservatives, there is one issue on which the country is united – Iran’s nuclear program. Both declared and potential candidates have uniformly reiterated their support for the Islamic republic’s nuclear enrichment program. The latest edition of the Iran Election Bulletin explores how the nuclear issue has affected Iranian politics, and how it may play out in the June 12 presidential election.
The current issue of the Bulletin – the fifth in a series published jointly by NDI and the Century Foundation – also discusses lessons that Iran's reformists can learn from past electoral defeats. Though most reformists are uniting behind Mir-Hossein Mousavi in the presidential race, rival Mehdi Karroubi remains a potential spoiler -- thus leaving the door open for conservatives to seize an election victory.
The Bulletin, published every two weeks, covers domestic political and election issues in Iran in the lead-up to the 2009 presidential election.
