Burundians and the international community alike hoped that Burundi’s 2010 elections would solidify democratic gains made since the signing of the Arusha Accords. Instead, the election boycott and breakdown of political dialogue disappointed Burundian voters and political leaders, and left the international community unsure how to help the country regain a democratic path.
After the elections, NDI conducted a public opinion study that examined Burundian perceptions of the 2010 electoral process, expectations for the future of their country and the extent to which gender, ethnicity and religion affected voting, and attitudes on security, civil liberties and government performance. NDI is pleased to present the findings of the study in its report “The Road Ahead: Citizen Attitudes about Burundi in the Post-2010 Election Period.”
Please join us on March 15 for a discussion about the principal findings of the report with Andrea Levy, author of “The Road Ahead.” The discussion will be moderated by Barrie Freeman, NDI Deputy Regional Director for Central and West Africa.
