NDI works with partners around the world to build more effective, transparent, accountable, and responsive governments. The Institute currently has governance programs in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Assisting in that effort are a number of organizations and institutions in the United States and abroad that are themselves dedicated to strengthening and supporting democratic governance. They include:
House Democracy Assistance Commission
[3]The House Democracy Assistance Commission (HDAC) was created in 2005 as a successor to the Frost-Solomon Task Force which had provided assistance to 10 new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe from 1990 to 1996. The Commission currently works with 12 partner parliaments, providing both training and material support to elected members and parliamentary staff.
Institute for Representative Government
[4]The Institute for Representative Government (IRG) was established in 1988 by former Members of Congress as an independent, bipartisan, non-profit organization to provide high level, professional exchange programs for legislators from developing or newly-established democracies. With this vision, legislators from emerging democracies would visit the United States, increase their awareness about government operations on the national and state levels, and interact with current and former lawmakers.
World Bank Institute
[5]The World Bank Institute (WBI) is the capacity development arm of the World Bank which helps countries share and apply global and local knowledge to meet development challenges. WBI's capacity development programs are designed to build skills among groups of individuals involved in performing tasks as well as strengthen the organizations in which they work and the sociopolitical environment in which they operate
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association [6]
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is comprised of national, provincial, state and territorial parliaments and legislatures of Commonwealth countries. The CPA works to promote parliamentary democracy through capacity building programs and networking with various regional and international partner organizations.
United Nations Development Programme
[7]The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the development organization of the United Nations, working in over 160 countries to build local capacity and increase access to knowledge and resources. Its primary aim is to strengthen countries in their ability to achieve Millennium Development Goals.
Inter-Parliamentary Union
[8]Established in 1889, the IPU is the international organization of parliaments of sovereign states. It contributes to the growth and development of its member parliaments by facilitating exchanges of experience between them. The IPU also considers issues of human rights and international interest, serving as a forum for its membership to express and debate issues.
International Budget Project
[9]The International Budget Project (IBP) is housed with the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) and is interested in the budget impact on poor and low-income people in developing countries or new democracies. The overarching aim of the project is to make budget systems more responsive to the needs of society and, accordingly, to make these systems more transparent and accountable to the public.
International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance
[10]The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Its objective is to strengthen democratic institutions and processes. International IDEA’s areas of expertise include constitution-building and electoral processes, political parties, democracy and gender issues, and democracy assessments. The Institute offers an extensive knowledge base as well as strong assistance to democratic reform.
Revenue Watch Institute
[11]The Revenue Watch Institute (RWI) is a non-profit policy institute and grant-making organization which promotes the responsible management of oil, gas and mineral resources for the public good. RWI advocates effective revenue management, citizen engagement and real government accountability, natural resource wealth that can drive development and national growth. RWI provides the expertise, funding and technical assistance to help countries realize these benefits.
National Conference of State Legislatures
[12]NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the 50 United States, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on state-related issues. NCSL is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of state governments before Congress and federal agencies.
