Amid the political disunity affecting both reformists and conservatives, there is one issue on which the country is united – Iran’s nuclear program. Both declared and potential candidates have uniformly reiterated their support for the Islamic republic’s nuclear enrichment program. The latest edition of the Iran Election Bulletin [3] explores how the nuclear issue has affected Iranian politics, and how it may play out in the June 12 presidential election.
The current issue of the Bulletin – the fifth in a series published jointly by NDI and the Century Foundation [4] – also discusses lessons that Iran's reformists can learn from past electoral defeats. Though most reformists are uniting behind Mir-Hossein Mousavi in the presidential race, rival Mehdi Karroubi remains a potential spoiler -- thus leaving the door open for conservatives to seize an election victory.
The Bulletin, published every two weeks, covers domestic political and election issues in Iran in the lead-up to the 2009 presidential election.
