About Win With Women

The Win with Women Global Initiative is a complement to more than two decades of work by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) [3] in pursuit of an equitable, democratic society where women’s needs are meaningfully addressed. Some of its latest activities are presented here.

The Initiative is aimed at increasing women’s leadership in elected office, political parties and in civil society. It was launched in 2003 by NDI and its Chairman Madeleine K. Albright [4] to promote strategies for increasing women’s political leadership worldwide. The anchor of the Win with Women Global Initiative is the Global Action Plan [5], a document that outlines practical recommendations for political parties to broaden their appeal by addressing women’s role as voters, candidates, party activists and elected officials. Women and men from more than 100 countries are active supporters of the Initiative and Global Action Plan.

Kosovo: Women Parliamentarians Engage Citizens on Gender Issues [6]

As women seek to establish their leadership in Kosovo’s emerging democracy, the Kosovar Women’s Informal Group and NDI embarked on a groundbreaking one-year television debate program last November. The live debate series is broadcast on national network television and engages women MPs from various parties in constructive policy dialogue.

Nepal: Women Participate in Drafting the Constitution [7]

The election of 197 women to Nepal’s constitutional drafting body is an unprecedented opportunity for women to participate in laying the groundwork for Nepal’s future. NDI recently launched the Women’s Leadership Academy, a series of training programs to help these newly elected women, members of parliament, government agency staff, and political party and civil society leaders to engage more fully in the constitutional drafting process.

Guatemala: Strengthening Indigenous Women’s Political Leadership [8]

Indigenous women comprise at least 20 percent of Guatemala’s population, yet they are just 1 percent of congressional deputies and .3 percent of mayors. In partnership with the Multiparty Institute for Political Studies and the Political Association of Mayan Women, NDI is organizing an Indigenous Women’s Political Leadership Academy to better equip them to participate in and lead political parties and civil society organizations (CSOs) and promote indigenous women’s issues.

NDI Honors the Women’s League of Burma and Archbishop Desmond Tutu [9]

The Women’s League of Burma, an umbrella organization of 12 groups representing different ethnic backgrounds, was honored by NDI with the Madeleine K. Albright Grant, which recognizes the achievements of grassroots organizations that effectively promote greater roles for women in political and civic life. The League works to empower women and to increase their participation in all spheres of Burmese society and Burma’s democracy movement and national reconciliation processes. NDI honored the League alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was recognized for, among other things, his advocacy for democracy in Burma.
