Alex Grigorievs is the resident country director for NDI in Azerbaijan, where he coordinates the Emerging Leaders Program among other NDI programs. Prior to coming to Azerbaijan, Mr. Grigorievs worked for NDI in Moldova as resident country director, supervising training programs on grassroots outreach to voters and citizens and working with political parties on cooperation and coalition-building. Mr. Grigorievs has also worked for NDI in Georgia, Russia and Ukraine.

Before joining NDI's team, Mr. Grigorievs was a Member of Parliament in his native Latvia and a member of the City Council of Riga, the capital city. He also taught political science and literature courses as a visiting associate professor first at the University of Missouri and then at New York University.

Mr. Grigorievs was awarded with the Order of the Three Stars of Latvia (2000) for his role as Commander of the Order in the struggle for Latvia's independence in 1989-1981.Mr. Grigorievs holds an M.A. in English language and literature from Latvian University and a Ph.D. in the theory of literature from Moscow State University. He speaks English, French, German, Latvian, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.
