The Middle East Workgroup is hosting a forum on "Taking Early Lessons from Tunisia's Transition Process," with a discussion led by Nicholas Collins, NDI program officer for Tunisia.
After the historic events of Jan. 14, Tunisia embarked on a steady political transition, albeit under a rushed electoral timeframe and continued pressure from the street. The overthrow of the regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali opened the doors to freedoms for Tunisians and dramatically widened the political landscape. It also significantly raised the expectations of citizens. Political actors, including the transitional government, political parties and civil society organizations, are struggling to steer an inclusive transition to a system of democratic governance, while addressing pressing economic and security challenges. Analysis of the decisions taken by leaders during this volatile time, as well as the role of parties, civil society and the street, can yield helpful insights for other states in the region where similar transitions are underway or might be in the future.
