Panelists will discuss the recently launched joint IPU-UNDP Global Parliamentary Report [2] which focuses on the evolving relationship between citizens and parliaments. The report analyses how citizens’ expectations of representative institutions are changing, and how parliaments, politicians and parliamentary staff are responding. The report uses the experiences of institutions and individual politicians to illustrate the challenges they face and discusses a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing their representative capacity. The report is directed at assisting parliaments and politicians to better understand their representative role – including the tensions they need to manage−in addition to providing examples of best practice from around the world.
