Speakers representing NDI, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) commended Angolans for conducting largely successful parliamentary elections Sept. 5 despite some procedural and logistical challenges.

A two-day retreat in Côte d’Ivoire, hosted by NDI, brought together 26 leaders from 14 political party youth branches and youth movements to discuss the role of young people in the country’s electoral process. The retreat provided a neutral setting where leaders from across the political spectrum could build consensus on the contributions Ivorian youth could make to ensuring that approaching presidential polls are peaceful.

Representatives from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and civil society weighed in on the political implications of “Zimbabwe’s New Deal” — a historic agreement between ZANU-PF, the longtime ruling party, and the two formations of the opposition MDC that many hope will lead to an effective unity government.

Parliamentarians and staff members from eight countries on three continents gained new insights into budget oversight in a three-day World Bank Institute (WBI)-NDI seminar that focused, among other things, on the role of parliamentary budget offices in overseeing spending and aiding transparency.

On behalf of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) we are expressing our concern over threats made against the Sam Rainsy Party in Cambodia. The Cambodian government has recently indicated that it may take steps that threaten the party's very existence. In recent remarks, Prime Minister Hun Sen, has called members of the party "spies," labeled the party as "subversive," and stated that the party could be banished from Parliament. It has come to our attention that leaders of the party have been threatened with arrest.
