The situation in Zimbabwe continues to deteriorate with the government's ongoing repression of basic political and human rights, its crackdown on dissent and suppression of the rights of citizens to free speech, assembly, and association.

During a February 20 event sponsored by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), former Czech Republic President Václav Havel was presented with the NED Democracy Medal. The occasion also provided an opportunity for NDI to present him with its Harriman Award for 2004. At the time of the NDI 20th anniversary Harriman dinner in 2004, President Havel was unable to travel to DC to accept his second Harriman award.

On Jan. 17, an NDI convoy was attacked in Baghdad, leaving four dead including staff person Andrea “Andi” Parhamovich of Perry, Ohio, and three dedicated security personnel from Unity Resources Group (URG). The names of the security personnel, including additional wounded, have been withheld at the request of URG management.

The Institute expresses its deepest condolences to its Iraq staff and the families who are facing this tragedy.

On Jan. 21, Serbia held its parliamentary elections on the eve of the international community’s decision about Kosovo’s future status. While Serbia’s political culture has long been blemished with periodic bouts of ethnic strife and nationalism, these elections offered an opportunity for the country to demonstrate its commitment to the democratic process and a more diverse and representative government.

In November 2006, members of the Iraqi Multi-Party Women’s Caucus met with numerous women politicians and government members in a national conference seeking to develop a coordinated national women's advocacy agenda and provide opportunities for Iraqi women to participate in skills-based training sessions.
