As Egypt embarks on its journey from autocracy to democracy, Egyptian political party and civil society leaders are finding it helpful to hear from those in other countries who participated in similar transitions in their own countries. Since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak in February, NDI has been bringing experts and leaders from Chile, Indonesia, Poland, Romania and Serbia to Cairo to meet with youth leaders, civil society and new political parties about the lessons they learned from their own countries’ experiences. Two such leaders, Sergio Bitar and Genaro Arriagada, recently travelled from Chile to Cairo.

Young Iraqi women aspiring to political careers are getting a boost from a new Young Women’s Leadership School launched recently with the help of NDI Iraq staff member Ferdos Majeed.

Majeed came to the U.S. for three months in 2009 as NDI’s first Andi Parhamovich fellow, named to honor Ms. Parhamovich, who was killed while working for the Institute in Baghdad in 2007. Each year the fellowship is awarded to a young woman — selected from NDI local staff or a partner organization – who is deeply involved in strengthening democracy in her own country.

Indigenous women in Guatemala are working to become more active in political life. To help them, NDI designed and carried out a six month leadership academy in 2009 and a three-course training program for potential candidates last year. These are among programs the Institute carries out in many countries to encourage better representation of excluded populations. One of the participants candidate in the training program, Izabel Francisco, sat down for an interview to discuss her experiences as an indigenous woman preparing to run for mayor in the upcoming September 2011 general elections.

When Zinayida Galchynska was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago, she was directing a health-care organization in Zaporizhzhya, in southeastern Ukraine. Already a community leader, she vowed that if she survived she would run for office, a move she believed would allow her to have a larger impact on decision-making in her community, particularly on health care issues. She did survive and set out to make good on her promise, though she knew the political odds were against her.

Full integration into Europe – through membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – is high on the agenda for Montenegro. But certain membership requirements still must be fulfilled.

One area that government ministries are addressing is communication with the parliament, municipal governments and civil society, and they have asked NDI for help. The Institute was approached by the minister of environment and spatial planning for help with internal communication and external outreach. Scott Persons, NDI’s resident director in Montenegro, explains how NDI is helping.
