Over two-thirds of the global population living with HIV/AIDS resides in Southern Africa. NDI has been working throughout the region to strengthen parliamentary leadership and outreach on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.

One unique story is that of Honorable Isau Meneses, a blind parliamentarian from Mozambique with whom NDI has partnered. His lack of vision has not hindered his awareness of the huge challenge that his country and others in Southern Africa face as they seek to address the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Public access, transparency and balance of power in government were among topics covered in a recent study mission to the United States by members of the Cambodian National Assembly (MPs) seeking to strengthen democracy in their country.

The MPs visited both the U.S. Congress and the Maryland State Capitol in Annapolis in a collaborative effort between NDI and the Institute for Representative Government.

Al Quds Center for Political Studies recently published the first reports ever prepared on parliamentary monitoring in Jordan. They provide information and analysis to Jordanian citizens and civic groups on various elements of parliament’s performance.

After more than a year of intensive effort, female activists in the Kurdish region of Iraq have achieved substantial progress in their campaign to secure for women the constitutionally-mandated freedom to travel.

Drawing on lessons learned in previous elections, NDI and its partner, the Institute for Parliamentary Democracy, conducted a code of conduct campaign in support of recent elections for Macedonia's presidency and
local governments. The campaign, which was designed to help avert the
violence and misconduct that affected previous elections, stressed the importance of fair, well-run elections to potential European Union membership.
