The Malawi Election Support Network (MESN), a coalition of 75 civil society organizations, has issued a second interim statement on Malawi’s May 19 presidential and parliamentary elections. The goal of the organization is to help promote public confidence in the elections through its observation of the voting and counting processes.

A recent article in the Daily Trust, one of Nigeria’s most popular newspapers, documented the work of a National Assembly office that helps civic groups better communicate with lawmakers and their staffs. The liaison office arose out of a three-year NDI program that provided assistance to members of the National Assembly and civic groups to improve policymaking procedures on government transparency and poverty reduction issues.

The March 15 victory of Mauricio Funes, candidate of the former guerrilla movement Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional, FMLN), marked a new stage in the consolidation of Salvadoran democracy. The victory of President-elect Funes, by a clear margin with 51.3 percent of the vote, creates the first government since the 1992 peace agreement that ended El Salvador’s civil war that is not controlled by the Nationalist Republican Alliance party (Alianza Republicana Nacionalista, ARENA).
