Nearly 70 percent of Nicaraguans are under the age of 30, but young people in the country remain disengaged from politics and government. They also are increasingly dissatisfied with political parties and government institutions, according to the findings of a recent NDI Democracy Survey.

To bring young people into the political arena and help build the next generation’s confidence in government, a consortium of Nicaraguan and international educational institutions has created a new program – the Certificate on Leadership and Political Management.

The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended Sudan's civil war gives Southern Sudanese the opportunity to vote next January on whether they want to secede from the north and create their own country. The credibility of this historic election will depend in part on thorough and professional election observation during the pre-, post- and election day periods to help ensure that the referendum is carried out in a transparent way. Following its successful observation in April of Sudan's national elections, the Sudanese Network for Democratic Elections (SuNDE) is observing registration and voting for the referendum.

Peru Debates

Voters in several areas of Peru will head to the polls on Dec. 5 to take part in run-off elections for department presidential candidates who did not achieve the required 30 percent of the vote during first-round elections Oct. 3. Ten departments – or states – will hold runoffs for the top two candidates.

In preparation for the vote, NDI is working with its Peruvian civic partner, Transparencia (Transparency), to organize, record and broadcast debates between the top candidates on television and radio.

A multipartisan network of politically active women is working to improve the lives of women in Albania by advocating on their behalf and making the political process more inclusive.

Albania has one of the lowest levels of women's representation in Europe, and the initial challenge of gaining access to government officials, even at the local level, often dissuades women from trying to impact public policy. In the face of this challenge, NDI's civil society partner, the Women's Network for Equality in Decision Making, spent the summer undertaking an advocacy initiative to improve health care for women.

Many Nigerians hope that general elections scheduled for next year will mark a turning point for their country. Since the end of military rule in 1999, elections have been held every four years, but they have been progressively marred by egregious and pervasive fraud, making each poll less credible than the previous one.

A coalition of four prominent civil society groups have come together to form Project 2011 Swift Count to monitor the election process and verify the official results, hoping that their independent effort will deter fraud and help restore public trust in the election.
