Tawakkol Karman, one of three women to share in this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle for democracy and the rights of women, visited NDI on Oct. 28. The Yemeni journalist and human rights activist discussed the demands of a protest movement that now encompasses hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and offered her vision for her country’s future. A 32-year-old mother of three, Karman was a key organizer of protests at Sana’a University that have grown into a nationwide call for democratic change.
Karman has worked as a political editor at several major opposition and independent newspapers in Yemen. In addition to serving as president of Women Journalists without Chains, she is actively involved with regional and international organizations dealing with democracy, human rights and journalism, and is renowned for her work in behalf of freedom of expression.
