NDI President Kenneth Wollack met in Islamabad last week with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari for a wide ranging conversation that included discussion of Institute programs to support political reform in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and to strengthen Pakistani political parties.
Wollack also met with Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, as well as other leaders of ruling and opposition political parties, civil society and the diplomatic community.

A controversial constitutional amendment, envisaging increase of number of MPs from current 150 to 190 in the next Parliament, has been initiated this week.

Philip N. Howard, an NDI election observer during Tunisia's recent elections, writes that the big story to take away from the first elections of the Arab Spring is that the election process was the biggest victory. Howard writes that, thanks to the use of digital media and other technology, there was a real effort to draw voters into the election process and to enfranchise them.
Honduras has taken important steps to restore its democracy since a coup d’état two years ago, but Hondurans remain polarized and frustrated with the quality of their political institutions.
A majority lacks confidence in all of the country’s institutions, from political parties and the courts to the army and the presidency, according to Democracy in Honduras: Political Values and Civic Engagement in 2011, a new NDI publication based on public opinion research conducted earlier this year.
