“Today, the United States is perceived by the Arab public as increasingly irrelevant to the issues Arabs care about,” argues Marwan Muasher, former deputy prime minister of Jordan, in his op-ed for the New York Times. The U.S. must adapt its old policies to provide support for “a new Middle East where citizens are increasingly aware of their own power and of the gaps between U.S. policies and American values.”

Women of all ages, regions and walks of life took to the streets last year during the uprising that led to the ouster of Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. They participated as candidates and campaigners during the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) elections that followed, encouraged by the country’s new electoral law that required a “zipper system” that alternated men and women on candidate lists. As the political transition continues, Tunisian women are playing active roles in civil society and political parties.

The goal of NDI's democracy programs, said NDI President Kenneth Wollack, "is to support a transparent, democratic process that gives people the freedom to make choices." Wollack was testifying before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs at a hearing entitled "Egypt at a Crossroads." The panel heard from witnesses from the four U.S.-based nongovernmental organizations (NGO) that were raided by Egyptian authorities in December, and that have employees now banned from leaving the country and facing the possibility of trial.
NDI received confirmation today that investigative judges have recommended that charges be brought against 15 of its Egypt-based employees. A statement released by Judge Ashraf Al-Ashmawy indicates that the investigation is concluded and that charges are likely to be brought against four Egyptians, five Americans, three Serbians, one Romanian and two Lebanese. The anticipated charges are managing an unlicensed nongovernmental organization and receiving foreign funds without the approval of the Egyptian government.

Columnist Thomas Friedman argues that journalists did not see the Egyptian revolution coming, which means they likely don't know where it's going, so they should be taking notes and learning before making assumptions and writing.
