The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

For the first time in Mauritania’s history, parliamentarians and business leaders have come together to discuss how to improve the economic and business climate of the North African country. The two groups agreed to submit an official report to the Mauritanian National Assembly detailing issues and recommendations, and they plan to establish a commission promoting ongoing collaboration between government and the private sector.
The self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi, a 26-year-old street vendor who had been beaten and humiliated by officials, galvanized tens of thousands of young Tunisians who took to the streets last December to protest the systemic denial of dignity epitomized by Bouazizi’s plight.

NDI today strongly condemned the ongoing use of violence by Yemeni security forces against protestors throughout the country and called upon the Yemeni government to cease the attacks immediately.  The Institute is extremely concerned by today’s live fire attack against protestors at Sana’a University by security forces and government loyalists that left at least 40 dead and hundreds wounded.  NDI is also concerned about the potential for violence to escalate further.

Where women have gained a political voice around the world, there have been tangible gains for democracy, including greater responsiveness to citizen needs, increased cooperation across party and ethnic lines, and more sustainable peace.
Calls for Democratic Transition NDI today condemned the government-backed violence that occurred in the wake of citizen protests in Tripoli, Benghazi and elsewhere, and joined international calls for the immediate cessation of attacks against Libyans who are exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
