Building confidence, enhancing capacity and making connections is the focus of a new practical guidebook for aspiring young women leaders just published by NDI. The book combines ideas and strategies from the Institute's Youth of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow (YOTLOT) program with best practices and recommendations from NDI's quarter century of working with women leaders around the world. It features expert advice for young women with a drive and desire to become leaders.
As Iraqis work to create a new government, a group of young people is working to perfect the civic advocacy skills they need to influence how policy is made. Members of Iraq's National Youth Caucus (NYC) came together recently to discuss their strategies for ongoing advocacy campaigns for improving high school and college education and combating the high rate of youth unemployment.
Citizen participation as a centerpiece of Kosovo's democracy was the theme of a week-long series of International Day of Democracy (IDD) events held in Pristina last month. Kosovars from a wide variety of ethnic communities attended the events, and most expressed an eagerness to learn about, and participate in, the legislative process.
Fifteen years after the genocide that devastated Rwanda, the country is still dealing with its lasting impact on politics and governance. Rwandans are looking to their government to deal with issues such as poverty and regional integration, and they are hoping for responsiveness from politicians and political parties. With presidential elections approaching, we sat down with Gaston Aín, NDI’s former country director in Rwanda, to learn more about the political landscape, the role of young people and NDI’s work with political parties.
Before voting in the general election on Oct. 3, citizens from around Bosnia tuned in to watch candidate debates that were novel in focusing on issues that voters said they care most about. The debates, along with a series of regional town hall-style meetings, provided Bosnian parties a platform from which to present concrete policy approaches to voters.

In Yemen, tribal conflict is a backdrop affecting the country's economic development, governance and national stability. Disputes over land claims and competition for resources and government services often lead to violence and cycles of revenge killings that can extend over a decade, hindering the work of government and international development agencies, and isolating citizens from the state.
