The National Democratic Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.

As ethnic divisions ease in the Balkans, political parties across the spectrum are finding the need for new approaches that focus on thoughtful policy debate rather than personality and ethnicity. Young leaders in particular will play an important role in these changes.

NDI recently published the El Salvador 2009 Benchmark Democracy Survey, which measures citizens’ democratic values and perceptions of democracy in their country. NDI also has administered similar surveys in Nicaragua and Guatemala.

The Young Women Leaders Academy (YWLA) is sponsored by NDI and hosted by the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Qatar). It provides practical skills and knowledge to help them use the political process to make meaningful improvements in their communities. The women, aged 10 to 28, were selected for the program because of their demonstrated leadership potential. They came from countries across the Middle East and North Africa.  
EU-Russia Centre | Link to story  » Twelve young Russian leaders visited Brussles from June 29 to July 3 as part of a study visit organized by the EU-Russia Centre and NDI’s Moscow office. The pariticipants, ranging from 21 to 27 years old, came from the Pskov and Karelia regions of Russia and represented a variety of organizations including political parties, youth groups and a number of NGOs.

Growing up in isolation from one another, young Serbs and Albanians born in Kosovo and Serbia have little opportunity, and often little desire, to interact with each other and with peers from other ethnic communities. Factors that brought their parents together when the countries were part of Yugoslavia – common language, economic opportunities and a lack of borders – no longer exist and have been replaced with misperceptions, fear, and disrespect.
Nicholas A. Rey, who fled Poland with his family as a child after the outbreak of World War II and returned as the United States ambassador during the Clinton administration, died on Jan. 14 in Washington, D.C. Rey was a member of the National Democratic Institute’s board of directors. “Nick brought his considerable knowledge and experience to the Institute,” said NDI president Kenneth Wollack. “And we benefitted measurably from his commitment to the organization and its mission.”
