Women's Campaign Training
As part of NDI's "Increasing Participation of Women and Youth in Politics" Program in Sierra Leone, NDI has been conducting campaign training for women aspiring to stand in upcoming general elections now scheduled to be held in May 2002. With a local partner organization, NDI has identified and recruited 30 women from all major political parties to be trained in Campaign Skills. These women form a support network of women candidates who can mentor newcomers and share practical experience. This group (which should expand to 50 by the end of October 2001) will meet with NDI for ongoing training and consultation throughout the campaign.
NDI's local partner, the 50/50 Group, is currently developing a fundraising network to raise community funds to support women candidates.
The goal of this program - one of three NDI programs in Sierra Leone --is to bring new women into politics and to increase their access to leadership positions through training and working within party structures.
Women with varying levels of political experience are participating: from first time candidates to sitting MP's, including the deputy speaker of parliament. Women currently in leadership positions have had little access to political training as a result of Sierra Leone's past conflict and instability.
