Overview NDI has conducted programs in Armenia since mid-1995 through a small office in Yerevan. For the past four years, NDI has worked with Armenia's democratic political parties, with the objective of making them more effective, competitive, and sustainable organizations. The Institute has also supported the efforts of civic organizations to increase public participation in the political process. Since 1995, NDI has organized training programs, both inside and outside of Armenia, for key political party activists. These sessions have helped those trained develop more systematic and effective approaches to election planning, voter contact techniques, coalition-building and pollwatching. NDI's activity in the civic sector focuses on support for It's Your Choice (IYC), a broad-based, nonpartisan organization originally created by NDI to monitor the September 1996 presidential elections. Since then, IYC has opened 10 regional offices and begun a wide range of grassroots programs, including town hall meetings and civic education seminars on constitutional rights and responsibilities. The organization monitored Armenia's 1999 parliamentary elections and distributed a report on its findings.
