    Overview

NDI opened an office in Baku in 1995, at the invitation of President Heydar Aliyev, and has since worked to foster a more open and pluralistic political environment through programming that focuses on civil society development, political party training, and elections reform and monitoring.

NDI works with all of Azerbaijan's major political parties. Through its training programs, NDI works with party leaders and activists to develop more democratic organizational structures within their parties, to better define party messages, and to improve internal party communication and coordination.

The Institute also works extensively on issues related to women's political participation in collaboration with the Organization for the Protection of Women's Rights (OPWR). OPWR seeks to enhance the role of women in public life with programs to improve women's proficiency in advocacy and public speaking and by encouraging and training prospective women candidates for public office.
