    Russia Map Background
NDI has worked in the Russian Federation since the early 1990s to assist political parties and civic organizations seeking to share experiences with their international counterparts. NDI has helped political parties, civic groups, and legislative bodies reach out to citizens and civic organizations, involve them in the political process. NDI has great respect for the sovereignty of the Russian Federation and, as such, does not support candidates for public office, finance political parties, or seek to manage political campaigns.

NDI maintains a small office in Moscow, and has conducted activities in St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Yaroslavl, Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Saratov, Samara, Astrakhan, Kaliningrad and Nizhnii Novgorod, among other regions.

NDI's programs in Russia currently focus on election monitoring and strengthening citizen engagement in politics at the regional level.

    Election Monitoring
NDI provides advice and shares international experiences with nonpartisan Russian civic groups seeking to promote democratic election procedures through election monitoring, public education on the rights and responsibilities of voters, and advocacy to promote transparency and accountability. Groups partnering with NDI have monitored all federal elections, and many regional elections, since 2000.

    Regional Engagement
Our regional program in Russia aims to assist the long-term development of political, civic and administrative partners at the local level with community outreach. Where there is a convergence of interests, NDI will assist elected authorities, NGOs and political parties in conducting campaigns aimed at resolving community problems. The aim is to stimulate greater citizen participation in day-to-day political life.

NDI's programs in Russia are funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy.
