NDI has worked in Indonesia since 1996 and supported programs to build the capacities of domestic monitoring groups, civil society organizations, political parties, women and youth political activists to participate in the 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2014 elections.

NDI has worked in Indonesia since 1996, supporting programs that build the capacity of domestic monitoring groups, strengthen political party operations, and support women and youth political activists to participate in the 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2014 elections. After the 2005 Aceh Peace Agreement was signed, NDI conducted programs to assist civil society and political parties in Aceh participate in elections and establish democratic political institutions.

Although Indonesia has become a leading democracy in the region, recent trends of democratic decline require greater political participation and inclusion, more responsive and transparent governance, and deeper government engagement with civil society. Since 2021, NDI has worked with an alliance of Indigenous Indonesian communities to increase Indigenous political participation and empower Indigenous candidates for office, supporting local communities in advocating for more inclusive governance and equitable, locally-driven solutions to civic challenges.
