Laura Nichols

Liberia Resident Director

Laura Nichols is NDI’s resident country director in Liberia. Previously, she was the resident country director in Yemen and Kosovo. She has more than 20 years experience in grassroots organizing, government, elections, media, fundraising and political party financial management.

In Canada she worked at the provincial and national levels of the New Democratic Party (NDP), serving as general party secretary in both Alberta and British Columbia. She also worked as chief of staff for three NDP opposition party leaders in provincial assemblies and as chief of staff for Alexa McDonough, former leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada.

Ms. Nichols played a leading role in fostering the participation of women as key players in the political process.  During the last provincial election in British Columbia she led the recruitment and training of women candidates and senior campaign staff under a ground-breaking Equity Mandate program that resulted in a significant increase in the number of women elected to the NDP caucus in the British Columbia legislature.

Ms. Nichols has also worked with the NDI Iraq program, traveling to Erbil to participate as guest speaker in the National Platform for Women conference which brought together a cross-section of over 200 Iraqi women with the goal of developing a common agenda in advance of the general elections.

Ms. Nichols has a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Alberta.
