Sandy Quimbaya

Tanzania Resident Director

 

Sandy Quimbaya is the resident director for NDI in Tanzania, having previously served as resident director in Malawi and Angola and as resident representative in Ecuador. In Tanzania, Ms. Quimbaya is supporting youth organizations to address barriers to participation and increase their engagement in local government. She is an international development professional with more than fifteen years’ experience in program management in multiple international contexts, primarily in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Southern and East Africa regions. Quimbaya has designed and contributed to initiatives that have strengthened the organizational development of political parties, increased the political inclusion of women and youth, and reinforced the collective action of civil society organizations. During her time in Malawi, NDI supported civil society organizations to advocate for electoral reform, improve local government responsiveness and accountability on service delivery, and safeguard public resources with the introduction of public expenditure tracking. For seven years, she led programs to assist reform-minded leaders from Ecuadorian political and civil society organizations to build more responsive political parties and stronger civic organizations to enhance political dialogue and citizen participation. She previously served as a program officer with the Washington, DC-based Latin America and Caribbean team of the Institute, managing projects in Colombia, Guyana, and Haiti. She is of Colombian descent and speaks English, French, Spanish, and basic Portuguese. Sandy graduated from Trinity University with a bachelor’s degree in international studies and a minor in political science and is currently pursuing a master of public administration at the Hertie School of Governance in Germany.
