Nadezhda Mouzykina is the Deputy Regional Director with the Central and Eastern Europe team. Since joining NDI in 2009 as a program officer, she has supported in-country and regional programming focused on parliamentary strengthening; political party and civil society development; election administration; and inclusion. Specifically, Ms. Mouzykina's work has focused on strengthening the civic and political participation of the Roma, women and youth, LGBTI, and religious minority groups. 

In every region of the world, people are frustrated with their political institutions. Public opinion polls cite declining levels of trust in political parties and from Mexico to India, people have taken to the streets to protest corruption, civic oppression, limited socio-economic opportunities and other collective grievances.

The National Assembly of Serbia has 250 members elected for a four-year term. Members are elected in a single district for the whole country on closed party lists. Seats are divided proportionally according to the widely used D’hondt method. Serbia has a multi-party system that produces coalition governments. 

Democratic political parties are in the midst of a perfect storm of populism, extremism, nationalism and authoritarianism. Corruption, indifference to voters and opaque party organizations have undermined public confidence in political parties, fueling democratic instability and weakening global institutions. Illiberal actors and malign influences from foreign governments like China, Russia and Saudi Arabia are likely to continue escalating their attacks on democracies in the years to come.

NDI Kosovo has worked to reinforce and safeguard democracy in the Kosovo region by directly combating misinformation and how it impacts the international sphere. This podcast explores the steps that can be taken to safeguard civil society against the instability that comes with fake news.
