The War on Ukraine and Democracy in Africa

The “New Realities of Citizen Election Observation in Africa Summit” was held in response to the changing nature of elections in Africa and around the world. Analysis of African responses to Russia’s war on Ukraine has largely focused on examining United Nations voting patterns on sanctions and condemnation of the war. As the international community seeks to understand these reactions, a growing number of articles are drawing attention to Russia’s increased influence in Africa in recent years. Since 2020, NDI has supported youth in the Southern and East Africa (SEA) region to enhance their political participation through the Political Party Leadership Institute (PPLI) program.
