Six Open Internet Advocates Selected for First Cohort of Global Open Internet Leaders

The Open Internet for Democracy Initiative (OIDI) announced the selection of the first cohort of open internet advocates for the Open Internet for Democracy Leaders Program. The six outstanding leaders (see their profiles below) were chosen from nearly two hundred applicants, and represent a diverse group of global advocates from local civic, media, and private sector organizations that are passionate about protecting and promoting an open internet.

The State of Tunisian Democracy: Citizens express their views

In February 2018, NDI organized a set of 12 focus groups to gauge public attitudes on the performance of government and elected officials, key priorities for the country and expectations for the May local elections and ensuing decentralization process. The research marked the Institute's 19th round of focus groups since the revolution of 2011 and the eighth since 2014 elections. The report summarizes attitudes and concerns based on the responses of the 117 respondents.

Political parties, as the preeminent platforms in democratic systems for aggregating political activists and transforming public campaigns into governance, bear the brunt of this heavy workload.

Making Women Safer: NDI Assists Tunisian Legislators to Pass New Law on Eliminating Violence against Women

On July 26, 2017, Tunisia’s Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP) unanimously passed groundbreaking legislation on the Elimination of Violence against Women. After years of debate and deliberation, the new law strengthens penalties against those who commit violence against women, both in the privacy of their home or in public.

Young leaders from MENA and US explore civic innovation in Washington, DC, and Silicon Valley

NDI brought 16 aspiring young innovators from Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, and the United States to Washington, DC, and San Francisco, CA, in April to meet with policymakers, technologists, civic innovators and social entrepreneurs. The visit was the culmination of NDI’s Civic Tech Leadership Program -- a unique bilingual program to cultivate young tech-empowered leaders in the U.S. and across the Middle East.

Seeing the U.S. Election through International Eyes

Elections in the United States are unique -- not only due to the decentralized election framework and history of campaigning, but also for the impact that presidential results in particular have around the world. This year Americans cast their votes for 469 members of Congress and 6,064 state-level elected leaders, in addition to dozens of ballot measures in individual states.
