After nearly 15 years of delayed national elections and longstanding political divisions among factions in the West Bank and Gaza, citizens will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the anticipated legislative council and presidential elections, respectively scheduled for May 22 and July 31, 2021.
The National Democratic Institute (NDI, or the Institute) announced today the start of a virtual election analysis mission ahead of the anticipated legislative council and presidential elections in the Palestinian Territories, respectively scheduled for May 22 and July 31, 2021. The analysis will focus on several key themes, including election administration, the campaign environment, the information environment, gender and inclusion and the impact of COVID-19.
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) organized a pre-election assessment mission to the West Bank and Gaza from April 25 to May 7, 2017, in advance of local elections scheduled for May 13, 2017. The mission aimed to produce an addendum to the Institute’s original pre-election assessment conducted from August 24 to September 1, 2016, in advance of the subsequently postponed October 8 local elections.
On September 8, the Palestinian High Court ordered the suspension of elections in the West Bank and Gaza scheduled for October 8. The elections would have been the first democratic contest in both territories since those for the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006. The court ruled that the polls cannot take place due to disputes over candidate lists and the inability of elections to be administered in Jerusalem.
