Since Ukraine’s 2014 Revolution of Dignity, NDI has conducted semiannual public opinion polling in Ukraine. These polls have provided a treasure trove of data related to Ukrainians’ perceptions of democratic change. To mark the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NDI has compiled a retrospective analysis of how views changed over the past eight years.

The most current polling NDI conducted in Ukraine provides new insights into the current mood of Ukrainian societies. It shows that the war is taking a heavy toll on Ukraine and its people. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainians have become more realistic but by no means less defiant. They are more committed than ever to building a functioning democracy and to joining NATO and the European Union.

The poll was conducted nationwide from November 14-22.

Between May and June 2023, NDI conducted 14 qualitative focus groups, and 700 face-to-face and 700 CATI interviews with Polish and Ukrainian residents living in seven of Poland’s largest cities, which include Białystok, Katowice, Łódź, Lublin, Rzeszów, Wrocław, Kraków. The interviews and focus groups explored attitudes toward the Ukrainian refugee population in Poland, along with how Ukrainian citizens experience the cities they live in.

TBILISI – Poll results released today by the National Democratic Institute (NDI or the Institute) and CRRC Georgia reveal that Georgian citizens are bound together by a shared commitment to European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The new survey, which was conducted before the European Commission’s November 8th decision, reaffirms the unwavering dedication of the Georgian people to European integration, with an impressive 79 percent expressing support for EU membership.

The number of Ukrainians who want to join NATO – as well as the European Union – is growing. NATO Secretary General Jans Stoltenberg has commented that "NATO's door is open" for Ukraine to join the alliance, and recent discussions have centered on lowering the threshold for entry. From May 2022 to May 2023 the percentage of Ukrainians wanting to join NATO increased from 73 to almost 90%. The number ‘expecting’ to join went from approximately 65 to 85 percent.

Economic issues are increasingly important for the citizens of North Macedonia due to inflation and rising energy costs. To strengthen responsive and transparent governance, the National Democratic Institute fielded public opinion research from April 13-24, 2023 and shared findings with opinion leaders to inform public policy-making.

TBILISI – The National Democratic Institute (NDI or the Institute) and CRRC Georgia have released the results of its latest public opinion research in Georgia, indicating Georgian citizens’ unwavering support for political (54 percent) and economic (52 percent) cooperation with the European Union (EU).  However, the aspirations of the Georgian people come into contrast with a perception that the government is not doing enough to ensure EU membership.

Approaching the one year anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked and illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainians remain committed to Ukrainian victory and optimistic about the country’s future despite significant hardships. According to NDI polling, 89 percent of Ukrainians report being optimistic about Ukraine’s future, primarily citing Ukraine’s victory as the reason for their optimism.

TBILISI – Poll results released today by the National Democratic Institute (NDI or the Institute) and CRRC Georgia show that EU support has grown to 81 percent, indicating Georgian citizens’ unwavering support for European integration. However, the aspirations of the Georgian people come into contrast with a perception that the government is either not doing enough or is doing nothing to ensure EU membership. There are similar trends vis a vis NATO - the majority of Georgians remain supportive of NATO membership (73 percent).
