NDI Condemns the Murder of Mozambican Election Observer

Friday, October 11, 2019

NDI condemns the murder on October 7 of Anastacio Matavele, in XaiXai, Mozambique, eight days before national elections. Anastacio was the leader of a nonpartisan election observation organization in Mozambique and reportedly had just participated in an observer preparation session for the Civil Society Training Center and the NGO League of Mozambique (JOINT). Anastacio’s brutal murder is a tragedy and an offense against the rights of citizens to engage in ensuring the integrity of elections and public affairs. NDI extends sympathies to his family and colleagues, and joins calls for an immediate, and credible investigation that brings those responsible to justice in a timely manner.

Nonpartisan election observation is central to promoting electoral integrity and ensuring citizen’s right to genuine elections. It has become a standard around the globe, practiced in more than 100 countries and supported by regional and international organizations, including NDI. We urge the Mozambican authorities to protect those in their country engaged in this important work.
